App/Service I’m re-discovering –

Doodle – This app solves the problem of scheduling a meeting with one person or multiple people! If you are a frequent meeting organiser then you know what back and forth a meeting invite can do. With this app, you can just create a meeting poll with few timings and share it with the people you want to have a meeting with. They choose the timing they are comfortable with and it fixes the appointment in both your calendars. Simple but useful.

An article I’ve been pondering on  —

The Reddit Forum That Guesses Who You Are Based on What’s in Your Fridge

This NewYorker article explores a Reddit forum where people post a photo of their fridge and members of this forum tell who are you based on the things found in your fridge. This basically invokes a chain of thoughts about someone’s personality traits. Interesting read.

What I’m listening to —

“The Lumineers – The Ballad Of Cleopatra”

I fell in love with The Lumineers the day I watched the song “Sleep on the floor”. But then the whole story behind the video was put into a bigger story as “The Ballad of Cleopatra”. If you just wanna watch my favourite song Sleep on the floor, watch from 8:25 minutes. But the whole story is just amazing.

Emotions are the key to courage and alive!

I wrote this article in 2014 and reading it in 2018 it still makes sense and I’m amazed to rediscover my own writing. This article talks about emotions and how they can be channelized to do greater things.

Quote I’m pondering on lately –

“Wisdom cannot be imparted. Wisdom that a wise man attempts to impart always sounds like foolishness to someone else … Knowledge can be communicated, but not wisdom. One can find it, live it, do wonders through it, but one cannot communicate and teach it.”

A recent purchase worth mentioning –

DOMYOS 100 ADULT SKIPPING ROPE BLACK – I bought this jump rope from the local Decathlon store recently opened in our vicinity. This was just under 200 Rs. ($3) and I’ve been loving it. It is simple but awesome. At the handles the length can be adjusted by couple of inches. I’m able to do over 100 jumps at one go with this. Due to the low profile of handles, I can carry it along anywhere in my travels as well.

New book I’m looking forward to read  —

“Leader: 50 Insights from Mythology”  by Devdutt Pattanaik – I’ve read about this author in many articles, he writes mainly on Indian Mythology. This book is a collection of insights from mythology and how those insights can be used in today’s environment and apply leadership to the complex problems of today. I got this book on the recommendation of the guy at a book store, I’m looking forward to read it next.

What I’ve been watching —

ScoopWhoop Townhall ft. Rajkummar Rao | Ep.1 –  This Townhall conversation of ScoopWhoop team with Rajkummar Rao (The Bollywood Actor) is just an awesome peek into the thought process of Rajkummar and how he is doing the odd films and still being successful. Go watch it.

An app I’m loving –

Hyperlapse

This is an awesome app made specifically for creating beautiful time-lapse videos. I’ve used it a couple of years ago for the first time and it blew my mind. Buttery smooth Timelapse/Hyperlapse videos. Since then this app is like a good tool in my photo video tool box.

Unfortunately, it’s only available for iPhones. But Microsoft made their own version of the similar application called “Microsoft Hyperlapse”. It does the similar thing on Android devices but I would say the videos made by Hyperlapse by Instagram are far more superior than Microsoft Hyperlapse.

You can download both from here –

Audiobook I’m relistening  —

We learn nothing By Tim Kreider

This book is like listening to your naked self, not just you. All us humans collectively. It’s brutal, unapologetic but at the same time so funny.

I’ve listened to this audiobook twice already and this week I’m listening to it again and thought you would enjoy it too.

If you wanna listen to it you’ll get this as your first book for free and you won’t need a credit card if it is your first time accepting an Audible book from a friend.

Just go here: http://a.co/c8QxbRn

After you accept the book, you will be prompted to download the Audible app to start listening.

Enjoy!

An App I’m loving –

Microsoft Launcher

If you use an Android Phone, the stock launcher is good. But I recently found out the launcher app designed by Microsoft and it has come a long way, It’s neat and provides a good number of functions which the normal launcher app doesn’t have. 3 key features which make it superior to the Android Default launcher:-

  1. Performance is super fluid and buttery smooth even on mid-range Android Phones.
  2. It has a Recent activities widget which shows you any kind of notifications or any activity happened on any app as a list, which is super handy for a quick glance over what’s going on.
  3. Customisation options to make your home screen a little bit unique in a subtle way, not so much fancy but better options than the default launcher.

If you want to download it on your Android device, click here.

A shocking fact I learned recently – It’s about Google Photos App/Service from Google. I use this cloud based photo service everyday to share my photos with family and friends assuming that the photos which we stare with certain people are completely private. But I learned very recently that It’s not the case, any photo which you share as an album are created with a public link, if someone has that public link, they can see you pictures without any login or authorisation in Google without you giving them access. It’s scary and it’s something which broke my trust in some ways with Google. I discussed this matter on Google’s Photos related forums online but I was amazed to see many people didn’t know this and were shocked too. But Google is not doing anything about it right now, probably because it is not there priority right now. I think it should be their first priority to fix privacy of their proprietary software/app. Just imagine a hacker searching the Public URLs of our Google Photos app somehow finds one actual link and is able to access our photos without us knowing. That will be a nightmare.
I’m searching for an alternative to this app right now and I couldn’t find any as of yet. But hopefully Google fixes it, otherwise we all will have to eventually remove our photos from Google’s cloud servers and delete this app.

App of the week –

Disk Drill

This is a data recovery app, recently due to power failure one of my external harddrive stopped showing one of my backup folders which contained all the backups of my devices. Loosing it would have been a big crisis. While searching for a data recovery tool, I found Disk Drill app for Mac. I Installed it and it started showing all the deleted data which I could recover, from the day one of the drive. If you are in that kind of situation, try it once it will just blow your mind.

It’s available both for Windows and Mac on their website.
