Hi Friends!

Greetings from Mumbai!

This past week, last week was productive and more and more learning for me.

I wrote multiple micro essays on different topics. Insipired from writers like David Perell and Seth Godin.

If you want to keep up with my writing, follow me on Twitter.

Here is this week’s Saturday-Pentacle. Enjoy!

Issue 211 // Week 8 // 2022

A good resource if you want to learn about GitHub

Getting started with GitHub – I’ve been tinkering with NoCode tools but while doing that I stumbled upon GitHub once again. I’ve used version control systems before, but never got around working with GitHub on any of my previous projects.

What made me wonder was it’s not just that you can use it for code and development pipelines, but also for documentation and version controlling of documentation.

In their getting started page there is a lot of good info to get started with version controlling and related stuff like –

  • Create and use a repository
  • Start and manage a new branch
  • Make changes to a file and push them to GitHub as commits
  • Open and merge a pull request

If you are curious about GitHub, this is a good time you get started.

My recent LinkedIn Article

Managing Turbulence – We all face highs and lows in our lives. But we never know how long each phase might last. In this article, I try to explore that, how to manage turbulence? What we can do to avoid such situations and if not avoidable – how we can prepare ourselves to get through them?

A Tweet thread I loved —

I loved this thread by RomeenSheth. His thoughts on the world’s most valueable skill, check it out.

A podcast episode I loved —

Boyd Varty — The Lion Tracker’s Guide to Life (#571) – and when you think there are no more interesting podcast epiosdes coming up with great storytelling, there comes this one.

Boyd is really a Lion Tracker and there are a lot of stories in this episode, but a terryfying story of plane crashes in his childhood start from 12:55. Check it out, I promise you’ll burst out laughing.

Quote which I found meaningful –

Writing solidifies your learning, so if you feel like you’re forgetting most of what you consume, you should probably write more.

— David Perell (@david_perell)

Until Next Saturday!

Thanks for supporting and reading.

Hello!

Last week went fast for me as I had been working on multiple creative works. My first short podcasting course is out! (Check out the playlist at the end of this page), a new podcast episode is launching in this week and another story coming soon in “Lifestyle Design in Action” series.

Plus I’m really excited about the interactive community we just launched on Vibely (app). Where we are starting up with Daily creative challenges for you all. So join in the fun (here is the special link for you to join)

Moving further, this year couldn’t get worse with all the unexpected things. Jagdeep (veteran actor) passed away this past week. I share about him in the 2nd point of today’s pentacle.

I focused on some exercise and meditation again this past week and tried centring my energy and focus. I’ve started going on long walks in night time (safe distance and when fewer people are there). The monsoons are here but we are just sitting home, it’s all that we wished for when we were in offices, but now as we are home, all we wish for is to go out! Life is such.

Coming to the book reading/listening progress, I listened to the Sherlock homes some more this past week and some of Atomic Habits –

  1. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes – 70% done (Audible)
  2. Atomic Habits by James Clear – 70% done (Audible) – This audiobook is like a page-turner version for audio (I don’t know if there is a specific word for it for audiobooks, let me know in comments if there is).

That’s it for the personal updates.

Without further adieu, please enjoy this week’s Saturday-Pentacle.

Issue 192 // Week 28 // 2020

A tweet I found really insightful about meetings

In the Work From Home era, meetings have increased drastically. But as an employer you should focus on how to reduce unnecessary meetings and as an employee you should think on the below points to make a meeting useful (if at all it was) –

A beloved veteran Bollywood actor who passed last week —

Jagdeep (Soorma Bhopali) passed away – A veteran actor famous for his roles like Soorma Bhopali passed away. I loved his Sholay performance so much.

His real name was Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jaffrey and he’s the father of actor, voice actor, dancer, comedian, impressionist – Javed Jaffrey.

May he rest in peace.

A new service I’m curious about

Hey.com – It’s a fresh take on one of the most important communication mediums EMAIL.

Did they reinvent it?

Not exactly, but they considered all the thing wrong about the current email services and tried to fix them and it took them over 2 years to get most of the things right.

I loved all the subtle nuances it has, but it got a hefty price tag of $99/year! But if you are considerate of privacy and time and less frustration weighs more for you then money, then this is it. It’s a great email service.

Here is a detailed demo of the service (loved how the CEO himself gave the entire demo, shows that how passionate a founder CEO can be) –

Music I’m loving —

Songs of Innocence by U2 – Sifting through my iTunes playlists from 2014, I found the U2’s album which they launched in a big surprise at Apple’s fall event in 2014, Apple presented a free copy of U2 album ‘Songs of Innocence’ to everyone with an iTunes account. I still have that album on all my Apple Devices.

Here is the entire album’s playlist. If you are up for it! (I love it btw, it was my companion on my marathon training sessions in 2014~15) –

Quote which I found meaningful –

In matters of style swim with the current. In matters of principle, stand like a rock.

— Unknown

Before saying “see you next week”

I want to share my first short course on Podcasting in collaboration with LMT (Last Moment Tutions). If you are curious about podcasting, you should check it out. I share a beginners guide to podcasting in this 5+1 part video series.

Here is the YouTube Playlist of it (because short course is FREE, main course coming soon!) –

Until Next Saturday!

Hello there!

Weeks are passing by slow and fast at the same time. Losing focus and getting into anxiety is very easy at the moment. But I’m finding pouring my mind over a journal page every day and meditating 10 mins every day especially useful to distress. As the lockdown is getting extended it’s still difficult to sit inside, but at the same time, we have slowly gotten used to the whole situation. Even though we are alone at homes but still as connected humans species (thank the internet) we are moving through the rough waters.

Moving on to the book listening progress, I didn’t make any progress on below two books, this week–

  1. The Sign of the Four” of the Sherlock Holmes series
  2. Becoming a Category of One by Joe Calloway.

But I moved forward on below books (added 2 new ones) –

  1. The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand – 10% read on kindle.
  2. Highly Productive Remote Work by Darius Foroux – 10% (found it via Darius’s newsletter, finding it very useful right now in this situation)
  3. Breaking Smart: Season One: How Software is Eating the World – 20% finished (an amazing book recommended by David Perell)

So making small progress.

Without further adieu, please enjoy this week’s Saturday-Pentacle.

Issue 182 // Week 18 // 2020

An interview I loved

Pretty Big Deal by Ashley Graham- Casey Neistat – This was a really casual looking interview but Casey opened up with Ashley in a great way about his process, his journey and I got three big takeaways from this interview –

  1. What should be a deal-breaker? – when a collab/deal collides with your values/social values.
  2. What should you seek with your creativity? – Find the coinciding point between the two circles of exponential growth and longevity of your creation.
  3. What’s the biggest point of growth on any platform? – Honesty and being yourself is the biggest content anchor for any platform.

An article I found really useful —

Lockdown relationship advice – Coronavirus-related anxiety is real and causing serious damage to our partnerships. This NYT article gives great tips to ease the strain.

If you care about your relationship with your partner or your family, then the first and foremost important thing is to take care of your self. Read the article on how to do that. Good Advice.

An info I accidentally found while doing research on a photo

Health benefits of a Torch Ginger Flower – Recently when I posted a picture of a Torch Ginger Flower which I had taken last year in Kerala. It made me learn more about this flower and I found some really good info about it. Especially the health benefits. Hence sharing the key points here (for full detail click the article link) –

Better known as Bunga Kantan is a popular ingredient in Malaysian cooking (like tom yam soup) that could also have health benefits. It’s also known to reduce inflammation, treat a loss of appetite, reduce diabetes and hypertension.

Music which made me feel alive —

Vex Oh by KAYTRANADA – This artist was suggested to me by Stuart in our podcast episode recently.

But I discovered a lot more songs when I checked this artist out, he’s specialized in low beat (115 BPM) music. I think this music will be amazing while cycling (when we can do cycling! Ermm).

Quote which made me feel grateful again (literally) –

“If I quit now, I will soon be back to where I started.
And when I started I was desperately wishing to be where I am now.

Before saying “see you next week”
Last week, I started a new series on my blog – Lifestyle Design in Action – A Story Series. In this series few of the people who have worked on their Lifestyle Design are sharing their stories as guest posts, The first story I published is of Sumersingh Rajpurohit (from LastMomentTuitions.com), check it out –

More stories to come every week as move along.

I also posted a few pictures on Instagram. You can check them out here or go to my Instagram for the whole stories and more –

Hello there!

It’s been 7 exact weeks since I’m inside my home. Lockdown seems to be extending and there is no clear sight of the remedy to this till now. But I’m keeping my eyes on the research and also the political weather around this, as things might be going towards a political storm as countries are calling out China on this blasphemy. Good to keep your eyes and ears open.

But still, keeping our optimism up and being safe at home for ourselves and the people who can’t be at home, should be our priority.

Over the period of this time, my “work from home” situation has kept me well occupied. I was working like a mad man for many days until I decided to have clear cut-off timings a few weeks ago. Start at 10 am and go up to 7.30 pm, keep a transition from work to personal life. I’m going to write a proper blog post about the tools and techniques I’m using to be productive at home. (Expect it soon in your inboxes).

Coming back to the newsletter and to the book listening progress, While I was not making much progress on the audiobooks till last week. – “The Sign of the Four” of the Sherlock Holmes series and Becoming a Category of One by Joe Calloway. This week I inched further and the sherlock book is about to come to an end very shortly and I read Joe Calloway’s book 25%. Plus I also started reading one of my old half-read book – The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand since last week on my Kindle. So last week was better from reading perspective. So good to progress, even if it’s not huge.

Anyway, without further adieu, please enjoy this week’s Saturday-Pentacle.

An useful resource I found

Flickr Photo Album of Obama’s time in WhiteHouse – I loved the Obama Administration since I read about Barack Obama himself and then I read the book Becoming by Michelle Obama and felt more close to both of them.

Recently I found this collection of photos of the Obama Administration in the Whitehouse (posted by the US govt long ago) and it gave me a lot of new visual stories about this amazing couple.

I just loved the photo album. You can check it out too.

An article I found useful —

How To Create Products That Sell For Decades – I love the writing of Darius Foroux and have been following him since the past 4-5 years.

Here is an article he wrote about Ryan Holiday‘s strategy on making timeless products that sell.

Here is a piece from the article itself to give a hint of the entire thing. But I recommend you should read the whole thing, it’s well written and useful.

Ryan’s process for making a perennial seller goes like this:

  1. Adopt the mindset of a creator that makes classics
  2. Create a great product that stands the test of time
  3. Perfect, package, and position into a compelling offering
  4. Promote it through different marketing channels
  5. Capture an audience and build a platform that stands the test of time

A how-to guide I found really useful for making my DSLR into a webcam for awesome quality

How to use a DSLR camera as a WebCam – In the lockdown as we are finding it convenient to get on a video call and get in touch with colleagues and friends. Usually, our laptop PC / Mac webcams are not as great.

What if we could use a DSLR lying around in our home as a webcam, awesome right?

But it’s not very easy to do if you don’t have a USB to HDMI cable. So this particular method helped me to be able to use my Nikon DSLR as WebCam.

If you are struggling as well, this video might help you. (Plus I’m making a simple blog post about this the process I took, few additional steps to remove the inconvenience.)

A song I loved —

Serenity by Mallika Barot & Asxem Dlean – Found this really beautiful piece done by Mallika and Asxem. Made me feel at peace.

To be noted that Mallika Barot is the daughter of Ranjit Barot, who is a renowned musician and has worked with Coke Studio projects and even with A.R. Rehman.

Please enjoy the song.

Hello there!

So Lockdown has been extended in India till 30th April in most of the states. Because the new cases are still on the rise, even though in a controlled manner, but still rising.

I think until the whole nation is tested with rapid test kits in large scale, we won’t know the scale of the spread. Even though it’s still contained because most of the Indians are obeying the stay home rule. But still, people who are out of job and food are forced to come on the streets to collect food from the NGO people.

In the past week, Cadila healthcare India who is a major pharma company announced that they have made the vaccine and it’s in animal testing phase right now. Even though the US also has some companies working on vaccines and Bill Gates is supporting parallel manufacturing of 7 strong US candidates for vaccine making, let’s see who wins the race.

This also makes a window for people to buy stocks of these companies and the underlying companies who are making the masks, ventilators. As they will eventually pop on the stock market. So we should look out for that as well.

Coming back to the newsletter and to the book listening progress, I didn’t progress much in this past week on the books front and “The Sign of the Four” book from Sherlock Holmes series (85% now) just made 5% progress. Another book – Becoming a Category of One – I just started that and wasn’t able to finish even the first part under 10%. Batching the audiobooks with workouts (non-running) didn’t work as well, as I anticipated. So I need to carve out at least half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening to progress on this front. I’ll work on it this week.

So without further adieu, please enjoy this week’s Saturday-Pentacle.

Interesting info about Bees I found

How do bees make honey? – While posting one of my Instagram macro photos of bee extracting food from the flower, I was intrigued by how exactly they make the honey? So I found this article on The Guardian where I found this simple but useful info about this –

Bees start making honey, which is their food, by visiting flowers. They collect a sugary juice called nectar from the blossom by sucking it out with their tongues. They store it in what’s called their honey stomach, which is different from their food stomach.

When they have a full load, they fly back to the hive. There, they pass it on through their mouths to other worker bees who chew it for about half an hour. It’s passed from bee to bee until it gradually turns into honey. Then the bees store it in honeycomb cells, which are like tiny jars made of wax. The honey is still a bit wet, so they fan it with their wings to make it dry out and become more sticky. When it’s ready, they seal the cell with a wax lid to keep it clean.

So that’s how bees make honey. They don’t make very much of it, though. It takes at least eight bees all their life to make one single teaspoonful.

An interesting person I started following on Twitter —

Through one of my favourite online writer – David Perell I found Matthew Kobach last week. Matthew is the Head of New York Stock Exchang’s (@NYSE) Social Media and one of the first people to ever pursue a PhD predicting how people use social media.

On his Twitter account, he shares his tips and tricks to for increasing your traction on Twitter. Very interesting personality.

A time management video I really enjoyed —

How I Manage my Time as a Doctor + YouTuber – 9 Time Management Tips – I really found this video by Ali Abdaal who is a Junior Doctor in the UK and also a famous productivity YouTuber. He’s videos have really popped up in last one year. I precisely remember a year back watching one of his iPad video – How students should use the iPad for better performance. I’m a fan of his videos since.

This particular video is for time management as he’s a solopreneur, Junior Doctor and YouTuber, so it was really useful to see how he manages his time. Check it out if you are also a one-person show, this video might be helpful –

A recipe (sort of) video I found useful

How to make awesome cold brew with 3 different methods – This Starbucks helped me make my first batch of cold brew coffee this past week. In this one they are making it with 3 different methods. 1st and 3rd methods require proprietary instruments. But the 2nd method was the saviour. A 3-litre jar plus a cheesecloth or a cotton handkerchief plus the coffee will make you 3-4 days worth of cold-brew with this method.

I can totally recommend this to make cold-brew coffee. It was delicious.

Looking back (An annual review – 2019)

[rt_reading_time label=”Reading Time:” postfix=”minutes” postfix_singular=”minute”]

From the past six years, I’m doing an annual review of my life. December month is usually the time of every year when I tend to slow down a bit and take a pause. It’s the time when I reflect back on the year. What I’ve done, where I’ve been, where I’m at right now and what I’m looking forward to. To promote writing online and to keep myself publicly committed to my new year’s goals, I publish the annual review here.

A rear view mirror showing Himanshu behind the camera near a waterbody showing looking back 2019 annual review text as well

This is my 7th annual review, you can access all my previous reviews at the end of this post.

This year also I’ll answer three questions, the same as the past 6 years.

  1. What went well this year?
  2. What didn’t go so well this year?
  3. What’s am I working toward?

Hope it will be insightful and interesting for some of you. Lets cut to the chase.

A practice I’m excited to try

Neurodynamic Breathwork – Since I listened to the podcast episode of The Tim Ferriss Show which featured Stanislav Grof (the founder of the Holotropic Breathwork). I have been curious to try out his methodology to reach an alternate state of mind – Holotropic Breathwork.

But trying it out has been a logistical challenge. As it happens in classroom kind of environment for a longer period class in a 12-hour format.

But then through a video from Yoga Journal’s YouTube channel, I discovered Michael who is a certified facilitator of holotropic breathwork who studied directly under Stan Grof. Michael Stone developed a short version of this breathwork, which is called neurodynamic breathwork (NDB). Michael developed this shortened version as a way to make holotropic breathwork more accessible so that participants could also practice this technique on their own.

On this site – NDB can be experienced online, via an online meeting session.

I’ve got enrolled for a couple of sessions and I’m really excited to experience this in the upcoming few weeks.

A podcast episode I loved and recommend —

David Perell’s podcast episode with Neil De Grasse Tyson: Bringing Space to Everybody – I love David Perell’s work and it’s amazing how in a span of a year or two he has been able to approach people so higher up for his podcast.

It says how – writing emails, creating great networks and giving more than you are paid for, work out.

This episode of his North Star Podcast with Neil De Grasse Tyson was amazing.

Even Neil appreciate the homework David had done beforehand for the episode. Like actually being able to speak about his autobiography which was published much earlier.

These kinds of things create a very organic connection with your guest.

All in all a great episode.

Music I loved –

Sunday Study – playlist by Thomas Frank – Thomas Frank has slowly become one of the YouTubers I admire, who put so much thought in the intricacies of an idea he’s putting out as a video.

This playlist he made for studying has some really thoughtful song selections to study on, I listened to it and I can totally recommend this.

A good listen.

A personal I’m fascinated with

Katie Bouman: The woman behind the first black hole image – Oh yes! On 10th April 2019, this 29-year-old computer scientist has created the first image ever of a black hole image!

The black hole image, captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) – a network of eight linked telescopes – was rendered by Dr Bouman’s algorithm.

3 years ago she led the creation of a new algorithm to produce the first-ever image of a black hole. Which was released on 10th April.

Here is her ted talk which she did right after this achievement –

An article I’m pondering on —

Why you should write By David Perell – David Perell is a prolific writer and I’ve started to love his work.

Here is one of his article which makes a strong statement on “Why you should write?” (Read you=everyone)

A quote from the article –

“Until now, the internet has connected us with people in our past. But writing online connects you with the people in your future.”

David Perell

Another good piece of writing.

This smoothie recipe really gave me some nutritional fulfilment.

A product I’m loving

Rug underlay with anti-slip – You have doormats and rugs at your home and due to the glossy finish of the floor, they slip every now and then, right? This product is the solution. Put it underneath the rugs/mats and they won’t slip again.

That’s it.

An essay I loved and recommend —

Peter Thiel’s Religion – This long-form piece from David Perell is deep and thought-provoking. He has written this long-form essay introduction to Peter Thiel’s ideas. It’s a different take on Peter as David writes about his Christian World View instead of the usual topic – Business for which Peter is famous.

Even though it’s the study of religion from Peter’s viewpoint, but it tells much more about life in the essence of it.

Kudos to David. Thanks for writing this piece.
